I had the privilege of being the live event calligraphy artist for this stunning DAOU Vineyards activation, where guests could customize their very own hats with hand-lettered burning on the brim. Think moody lighting, gorgeous felt hats in every color, a glass of world-class DAOU wine in hand, and the smell of warm felt as names, words, and phrases came to life right at the table.
What Is Hat Brim Burning?
Hat brim burning (also called pyrography on felt) is the art of using a heated tool to burn lettering or designs directly into the surface of a felt hat. It creates a permanent, tactile impression that looks like it was born there — no ink, no stickers, nothing that will wash away or peel. Just beautiful, lasting calligraphy embedded into the hat itself.
Every single hat I worked on that evening was one-of-a-kind. Guests chose their own words — names, nicknames, a favorite phrase, or just their initials. One guest went with the bold and perfectly Western "Wild Card" scripted along the inner brim. Others had their signatures burned right onto the crown of the hat. And of course, several guests went home with the iconic DAOU logo lettered in my signature calligraphy style — a keepsake that ties them to an unforgettable evening.
